Torrens River Wetland 3rd stage
WACRA are seeking support from Government to fund the 3rd Stage of the Torrens River Wetland from Tapleys Hill Road to the Outlet in Gulf St Vincent. Our objective is to improve water quality and reuse in addition to adding significant biodiversity along the whole of the River.
Already significant improvement is being experienced from the installation of the first and second stages and high levels of support from residents, users of the Linear Park, bike riders, joggers, walkers and visitors – as shown in a extensive survey conducted by City of Charles Sturt in 2008/9.
WACRA are sensitive to the issue of the horses who have been a part of the Torrens River / Breakout Creek environment for many years. However, horses grazing near or on waterways is bad environmental practice and must be stopped. This practice is being stopped upstream along the six creeks in the Mount Lofty Ranges, so if we are serious about cleaning up our waterways the same must apply downstream. WACRA has written to various large landowners around the area to find alternate suitable agistment. We want to work collaboratively with the Riding Club to assist in whatever way we can as we are very aware of the emotional effect of having to relocate.
We have written to the Natural Resources Management Board (NRM), spoken with the City of Charles Sturt and local MP Paul Caica to outline the significant benefits of extending the Wetland all the way out to the Gulf. Government needs to make a commitment to allocating sufficient funding to undertake community consultation and develop a plan for the 3rd stage. What WACRA proposes is in line with the Government's own Torrens River Task Force Report and the Government-commissioned Adelaide Coastal Waters Study Final Report
