To
the Hon Mike Rann MP, Premier of South Australia
GPO Box 2343 Adelaide SA
5001
I call
upon the peopleÕs Parliament of South Australia to take ownership by
acquisition for the citizens of Cheltenham and South Australia, the Land known
as Cheltenham Park Racecourse so that it be preserved in perpetuity as Crown
Land and maintained for the enjoyment of future generations,
and that:
- A tract of the described
Land is preserved in a Memorial to the ownership of this land by the
indigenous people of the Kaurna Nation, as acknowledged by the Letters
Patent.
- The Land be formed to
provide a large urban storm water retention scheme with swales, ponds and
ephemeral wetlands to minimize the risk of flooding and property damage in
the immediate area and to properties downstream in the flood plain that
rely on the engineered drainage system for flood protection.
- Wetland water harvesting,
aquifer storage and recovery for irrigation, commercial and other uses be
integrated with natural landscape for habitat creation within a restored
indigenous forest of woodland, scrub and grasses.
- Open space for
recreational and sporting pursuits, community and display gardens be
linked with pedestrian and bicycle pathways.
- Educational and
interpretive sites with sculptures and public art are created as a
Memorial to the Workers and their families of the surrounding Industrial
Heartland who contributed to the wealth of South Australia (1930-1980) and
to the notable pioneers in Public Administration, Education, Aviation,
Sport etc whose endeavors are now our Heritage.
I affirm that these claims will provide
the community benefit promised in the ÒHave your sayÓ consultation prior to the
ensuing change of zoning and the lifting of the Proclamation prohibiting
subdivision of this Land.
